Being barely the right side of 401 I grew up playing the original Elite2. In a time where most games were variants of platform games or arcade games, Elite showed a depth that was unparalleled at the time. It also started me on a 30 year quest to find the next Elite.
A number of games came close. Probably my favourite was Privateer 2, although I have spent many hours playing I-War 2, The X Series and Eve Online. There have been others too, but none have quite scratched the itch; there was always something missing.
When David Braben announced he was remaking Elite for modern computers I simply threw my wallet at him. If you include the cost of the computer it’s easily the most I’ve ever spent on one game. Even without that cost, it’s up there in my top 3 – and the other two were subscription based games racking up the cost each month.
I view a game as being cost effective if it costs me a less than £1/hour. A good title will get usually see me play for over 50 hours so easily meets this goal. Elite will need to see several hundred hours, although I suspect this won’t be hard. I invested 300 hours in Skyrim, and well over 2000 hours in World of Warcraft3, both games that I view as being on a par with Elite in their own genres. I’ve found that, once you get to that level of involvement with a game, you tend to gather a lot of knowledge about it – by the end of my World of Warcraft stint I was writing plugins and had heavily customised my UI.
Given I expect to spend hundreds, if not thousands of hours playing Elite Dangerous4 so I thought it would be useful to capture the stuff I learn. I’ve already posted a number of YouTube videos, and decided to start this blog; partly to chronicle the adventures of my character, Cmdr Davis, and partly to capture information about the Elite Dangerous universe. There is also a Twitter account for my character, so plenty of ways to get involved and get in contact.
