As one of the Elite: Dangerous founders I get all kinds of nice things in game, including the option to start with a pimped Cobra MkIII, 40,000 credits and an Eagle. I dread to think how much the Cobra would cost from scratch, but I suspect it’s well over a million credits – a far cry from a sidewinder, 4 ton cargo capacity and a measly 1,000 credits.
I’m no combat pilot, preferring to win fights through superior firepower, so the Eagle was sold straight away, netting me another 40,000 or so credits. 80,000+ credits and a pimped Cobra is rather a nice start and I was quickly able to upgrade to a 36 ton cargo capacity and find a trade route that would make 50,000+ credits per round trip.
My problem was that the Cobra wasn’t my Cobra. It was someone else’s, on permanent loan to me. Despite the ‘no strings, no hidden clauses’ promise it just didn’t sit right. So I bought a Lakon Type 6 as soon as I could.
It would appear that the Type 6 configuration in the beta is not the same as the basic Type 6 configuration in the final release. Jump range isn’t great, heat management sucks and there are it’s only got a 50 ton cargo capacity. But that’s OK. It’s my ship. I bought it, with my own money – albeit money I made using the loaned ship.
I’ve popped one upgrade into the Lakon so far, and that’s an improved power plant with better heat dissipation characteristics. The upgrade has meant I now have just1 enough range to ply my trade route and I’m not constantly getting overheat warnings.
Next step is to start increasing the cargo capacity and upgrading some of the other components until I’ve got somewhere between 5 and 10 million worth of assets. The current plan is then to get an Asp, tool it up and go exploring.
1 Like literally just, jump range is 10.21Ly, required jump distance for my trade route is 10.2Ly.
